Aim to Expand The Ultra Low Emission Zone
In London, school children are particularly affected by poor air quality and it has a huge impact on them. New research shows that 47,500 children in London attend schools located within 100 metres of ‘Red Routes’ – exposing them to an illegal level of air pollution. The government seems to not do much about this either – as they were found to have failed their legal duties to meet healthier limits. To add to this, research has shown that exposure to poor air quality can irreversibly stunt children’s lungs and create health problems for the rest of their lives. In extreme conditions, it can cause fatal injuries.
A coalition of environmental groups has got together in an attempt to expand the area of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to more schools, homes and local high streets. The aim of the zone is to reduce the number of cars driving through the areas to decrease air pollution. Persuading the government to undergo the change definitely doesn’t happen overnight, and for the practices to take effect don’t happen straight away either.
The ULEZ is an area where all vehicles have to pay a daily charge to drive in, which in turn, reduces the number of cars driving on the roads. So this expansion is a very positive prospect, but we can still all do more!
Driving Kids Back to School
Now that children have been back at school since March 8th, air pollution levels will most likely continue to rise, which is why a change in our behaviour is imperative. So you may ask… how can we go about making a change?
We can start by reducing the number of cars on the road and what better way to do this than by lift-sharing? Especially if several cars are driving to the same location. As we start to move out of lockdown, we can start to organise more sustainable mobility to and from school.
