The Plastic Problem
Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste enter our oceans, harming marine life and ecosystems. Much of this waste originates from coastal communities that lack formal recycling infrastructure. If not intercepted, this plastic finds its way into waterways and eventually the ocean, contributing to the global pollution crisis.
How Plastic Bank Works
Plastic Bank operates in vulnerable coastal regions where plastic waste is most likely to enter the ocean. The system is designed to empower local communities while tackling plastic pollution through a closed-loop recycling model. Here's how it works:
- Collection – Individuals, known as "Ocean Stewards," collect discarded plastic from beaches, waterways, and surrounding areas.
- Deposit – Collected plastic is brought to designated Plastic Bank collection centres.
- Exchange – Collectors receive compensation in the form of Social Plastic® Tokens, which can be exchanged for goods, services, or cash.
- Recycling & Reuse – The plastic is processed into Social Plastic®, a verified recycled material used by global brands to manufacture new products.
This process not only removes plastic waste from the environment but also provides economic opportunities to communities where waste management options are limited.

Through the scheme, she earns extra income and vital benefits, such as health insurance for her husband. She is proud to be an Ocean Steward, stopping ocean plastic while improving her family's life.
