Peru Food Bank
Situated in the diverse landscapes of South America, Peru is a country of rich cultural heritage and natural resources. However, it faces significant challenges in food security and environmental sustainability. Despite its agricultural bounty, a combination of geographical disparities, socio-economic inequalities, and climate-related impacts has left a substantial portion of its population without reliable access to nutritious food.
CSA Group is a global organisation dedicated to developing standards and testing, inspection, and certification services to ensure the safety, sustainability, and performance of products, systems, and services. Founded in Canada, CSA Group is well-regarded for its comprehensive standards in a wide range of industries, including energy, health care, and sustainability. The organisation also offers robust environmental and climate-related standards, including those for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions, helping companies and projects meet high standards for environmental integrity and safety.
A 2021 FAO study reveals that 51% of Peru's population grapples with moderate food insecurity, lacking steady access to nutritious food, juxtaposed against an annual wastage of 9 million tons of food.
Since 2014, Peru Food Bank has stepped up as a pivotal player in bolstering food security and slashing rates of anaemia and malnutrition, serving 164,000 people. Their mission extends beyond combating hunger to fostering a sense of community solidarity and environmental protection. By diverting food, personal care items, and consumer goods—often discarded due to minor defects, nearing expiry dates, or surplus stock—from landfills and incinerators, where they contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the project plays a crucial role. Instead, these goods find a second life through sales or donations, benefiting communities in need while environmental impacts are meticulously tracked on the CoreZero platform. This initiative not only combats food waste and hunger but also champions a reduction in GHG emissions, underscoring a commitment to both social and environmental well-being.
