When you picture the UK’s wild landscapes, rolling heather-clad moors might spring to mind. These vibrant purple expanses aren’t just beautiful—they’re crucial for our environment in ways that often go unnoticed.

How Heather Helps Fight Climate Change

We often think of forests when we talk about carbon capture, but the UK’s heather-covered moorlands are doing a lot of heavy lifting too. These areas are incredible at storing carbon, especially when managed properly. In fact, the heather and the peat underneath it are some of the best natural carbon sinks we have, often outpacing forests in this regard. Heathland and carbon storage.

The secret lies in the peat beneath the heather—a thick, waterlogged layer of slowly decomposing plant material. This peat can lock away carbon for thousands of years, but it’s a delicate balance. If the land is disturbed—by overgrazing, fires, or poor management—the carbon stored in the peat can be released back into the atmosphere, which is exactly what we don’t want.

A Sanctuary for Rare Wildlife

But it’s not just about carbon. Heather moorlands are also teeming with life, providing a haven for some of the UK’s rarest species. Take the nightjar, for example—a bird that’s thriving in southern England’s heathlands thanks to conservation efforts. Nightjar populations are flourishing, highlighting the importance of these habitats. It’s not alone; the Dartford warbler, various reptiles, and a host of other species also call these moors home.
