Circular Economy and waste management

This project reduces carbon emissions by extending the lifespan of surplus items through reuse and redistribution.

Waste reduction and circular economy

Location

United Kingdom

The concept emerged after the founder witnessed significant waste during an office relocation in London, where usable items were discarded rather than reused or donated. This experience revealed a gap in the market for a platform to facilitate the redistribution of surplus items, leading to the establishment of the project in London in 2015.

The UK’s strong emphasis on sustainability and circular economy initiatives created a supportive environment for the project’s growth. Regulatory frameworks and corporate responsibility standards in the country aligned with its mission to reduce waste and promote reuse. This alignment enabled early partnerships with major UK-based organisations, such as British Land, helping to solidify its presence and operations.

Over time, the project operator expanded into Spain, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates, but its roots and primary operations remain in London.

Registry

Global Carbon Registry (GCR) leverages cutting-edge technology to establish itself as a global leader in delivering user-friendly, fully transparent, and verifiable carbon credits. Each carbon credit issued by GCR originates from rigorously vetted projects that undergo comprehensive approval including Project Design review and independent third-party Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) processes, guaranteeing the highest quality of verified Global Carbon Credits (GCCs).

About

This leading ESG-focused reuse platform enables businesses to repurpose and redistribute surplus items across key sectors including construction, real estate, retail, hospitality and medical. The platform connects enterprises, charities and SMEs, making it easier to manage unneeded assets sustainably while reducing operational waste and costs.

The solution helps organisations address growing environmental challenges, reduce Scope 3 carbon emissions and deliver social impact. It is already trusted by more than 10,000 members across the UK, Spain, New York and Texas, with further expansion planned across the US in 2025.

Organisations using the platform can choose to reuse items internally across multiple sites or externally redistribute them to a global network of charities, nonprofits and small businesses. In both cases, this reduces the volume of waste sent to landfill or incineration, lowers storage and purchasing costs and improves resource efficiency.

Internal Reuse and Loaning

This function enables organisations to manage stock across their own departments, locations or business units. Items can be listed for loan or transfer, which helps reduce unnecessary procurement, avoids duplicated purchases and ensures optimal use of available resources.

External Reuse and Donation

Surplus assets that cannot be reused internally can be listed on the marketplace and made available to vetted charities and smaller organisations in need. This promotes circularity while creating measurable social and environmental value. Examples include fixtures, fittings, furniture, unused stock, and equipment.

Business Benefits

Organisations using this platform benefit from reduced waste disposal and storage fees, lower transportation costs and improved sustainability performance. Many users report enhanced operational efficiency and stronger internal asset visibility.

Critically, the platform automatically generates real-time ESG data including metrics on waste diverted from landfill, carbon savings and social impact delivered. This data supports reporting obligations, helps meet internal sustainability targets and can contribute to better financial reporting and SDG alignment.

Impact to Date

The platform has already demonstrated large-scale environmental and social benefits:

  • 61,197,726 kilograms diverted from landfill
  • 6,126,629 items listed and reused
  • 4,053,592 people supported through redistributed goods
  • £373,896,462 in value saved by charities and nonprofits
  • 77,427 tonnes of Scope 3 carbon emissions deferred
