Mexican Foodbanking Network

Mexico presents a critical opportunity for food waste rescue initiatives due to the stark paradox between massive food waste and persistent hunger. Nearly one Mexican per hour dies of hunger while 50,000 tonnes of food are thrown away daily Food banks combat Mexico's twin plagues of hunger and massive food waste, highlighting the urgent need for redistribution systems. The country generates over 22.7 million tons of food waste annually, posing significant economic and environmental challenges The Reality of Food Waste in Mexico, while approximately 10.2 million people face severe food insecurity Population facing food insecurity by severity in Mexico 2022 | Statista.

CSA Group is a global organisation dedicated to developing standards and testing, inspection, and certification services to ensure the safety, sustainability, and performance of products, systems, and services. Founded in Canada, CSA Group is well-regarded for its comprehensive standards in a wide range of industries, including energy, health care, and sustainability. The organisation also offers robust environmental and climate-related standards, including those for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions, helping companies and projects meet high standards for environmental integrity and safety.
The Mexican Foodbanking Network represents a comprehensive solution to three interconnected global challenges: hunger, food waste, and climate change. This network of more than 50 food banks operates throughout Mexico, rescuing food across the entire value chain and redistributing it to families, communities, and institutions in need. As founding members of the Global Foodbanking Network and validated by Charities Aid Foundation International, Red BAMX operates under a sustainable development model that leverages cutting-edge technology to maximise impact.

The project's impressive scale demonstrates its significant environmental and social impact. Over the period from 2021-2023, the network rescued over 321,000 tons of food, directly assisting more than 2.4 million people while avoiding over 370,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions. This dual approach addresses food insecurity while simultaneously preventing methane emissions that would otherwise occur from food decomposition in landfills. The network rescues approximately 120,000 tons of food annually, reaching over 2.7 million people and contributing to improved nutrition and food access across Mexico.
The carbon credit program generated from this initiative offers multiple co-benefits beyond emissions reduction. It promotes sustainable consumption patterns, reduces unnecessary food production, improves living conditions and socio-economic well-being, enhances nutritional structure and food access for millions, and prevents thousands of tons of methane emissions. The project has generated over 370,000 carbon credits to date, with an additional 150,000 credits available as of December 2024, and projects the generation of over 1.5 million carbon credits over a 10-year period.
